Monday, 12 October 2009

I was just listening to Newton Faulkner, and I came across this gorgeous image.. so I thought I'd 'get my design on' and add a little pzazz to it with a typeface* or two.

* typeface = font, but we hate this word.

For All The People, Joel Houston: Sydney Australia

I got the grand opportunity through working with Fresh Aesthetics to work on the concept artwork for Joel Houston's (Hillsong) 'For All The People' Blog. What Joel does around the world, is for all the people. I have a deep respect for this guy. Learned a lot from him at College. Great kid. Would love to collaborate and do more for what ever else he heads up out there. See The I Heart Revolution.

Batida: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The Brazilian gentlemen Rômulo Cyríaco & Bruno Negrao had a great idea for a new event called Batida. Now 'Batida' in Portuguese means 'Beat' (a musical beat), or a 'Crash', but there's another meaning to the word, used in an expression, that is to say, that something is out of fashion, old, not cool, not hype. That in fact, is what attracted Rômulo the most: ".. because to name the party BATIDA, is like calling it an OUT OF FASHION PARTY but by not saying that exactly. The word has many meanings, so it's an open title. You could think that, and you could also think other things. It's like self-imposed irony, and I like that."

"The idea is that something (the music) can stay out of fashion for a whole decade, but suddenly become cool again.." Rômulo continued, "I'm also getting tracks that are new and are going to be out of fashion soon. Also, tracks that are new which somehow relate to the old ones... electronic music mainly."

Recently, Bruno visited Montreal and saw an exhibition of Robert Longo's work. For the visual concept of the party, the guys hoped that I could somehow incorporate Longo's 'Men in the Cities, 1979' artwork in to the work that I was to present to them. After a lot of thought, we decided to go ahead and use Robert Longo's illustrations with the hope that if he were to see this work, that he'd understand that we are merely giving glory to his talent and spreading the word of everything that is Robert Longo. Go see his work and enjoy.

The guys were great to ask me to create the first visual identity for the launch of this new venture. We're hoping that the party will be a success.

I've enjoyed 'sponging' during my travels abroad. And I will continue to do so of course.

Grooves Urbanos: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

See the Grooves Urbanos Promo Video.

So tomorrow night is the launch of our much awaited project, the Grooves Urbanos event. Eduardo (Duda) & Tiago were great in recruiting me to work on their concept with them, using the method of Light Painting - something we had never tried before, which, as it turned out, kept us going till 5am the night of the shoot, but looked oh-so-nice.

Both the artwork method & the genre were new to me, so this was fun.

I'll let you in on a little something else.. after initially thinking that we set the bar a little too high with this initial project, if this one goes well, we think that we may already have the concept for the next Grooves Urbanos! So just you wait!

ryanwynncreative.blogspot.com

Okay, you know when you wake up and it takes a few hours to zone in and emerge into your creative-self that day, and then you awaken the world with the wonderment of your creativity? (Pah ha!) Well, in my case, that wont happen if I haven't had my morning english breakfast tea, and my steaming morning shower. Ahh, life.

It's now 16:09, it's a Thursday, I'm in Sydney on a friends computer creating this new portfolio-blog, with the highest temperatures outside recorded in a very very long time, and yes, I have not had my morning routine. Yes, I'm still in my sleep-wear. Yes, it's grand. Yet for now, on this day of laze, i simply can't come up with a better name than 'ryanwynncreative' for the moment. But alas, it's early days. And maybe it'll work?

What I've got in me - the dreams, plans, and desires - is something I'm excited to allow to emerge over time to come. For now, here's some of the work I've done pre Sydney. That is, 2007 and before:

leaving the nest

So at University, in 2004, one of our final projects was to document a subject of our choice, and design, compile and produce it too. I chose to deliver a piece magnifying the design graduate's road as they 'leave the nest' and enter the creative world they've dedicated their few years preparing for.

The bulk of the project contains interviews I had with the likes of Eduardo Recife of Misprintedtype as well as the nice nice people at I Love Dust. Thank you friends.

i love creative bureau

I had a great year there. Creative Bureau, Durban, South Africa.

yakkin

Like MSN on our phones, Yakkin came to us to do their entire brand. I created the logo, branding & website concept. This was fun, but sadly, I didn't see the results of this pitch, because the project was in production well-after I had left Creative Bureau for Australia. If Yakkin had wanted to go for this website concept, I was looking forward to doing things like photographing my friends walking over a hill at sunset (image concept for pitch borrowed from iso50.com); and animating the leaves and/or 'news' typography. Oh well.

italy

I had a great time. No, a grand time.

fast 50 plus

When I was in London in 2007, there was a technology conference for people over the age of 50 grow in confidence with the advancing technology surrounding them. These were the final designs, the logo of which I designed too.

teaching nights

While in London, Hillsong asked me to put something together for their teaching nights.

leadership

3m wide quickscreen for Leadership Vision Night.

dude

At Ogilvy in 2005, I got many opportunities like this to do some illustration having come from working with Orange Juice Design, now renamed 'Mister Walker'. Garth was a great teacher. He's also internationally famous for Ijusi Magazine. Oh how we love it!!

dcc

At Creative Bureau, I got to design everything for the front-end of DCC's website, including each descriptive image for every window and section. Unfortunately, since developing the site, some of the elements on their main page is, is being maintained by their in-house team atm, and isn't very tantilising.. yet.

energizer

Creative Bureau got asked to do the Energizer South Africa website. This was my piece.

pearl

Pearl was great. This was my second album design ever done, and she came to us at Creative Bureau and just let us do our thing. She's the type of client i LOVE. She trusted our judgement, our decisions and creativity. Ah! Joy.

umbani

In the native 'Zulu' language in South Africa, Umbani means 'Lightning' and symbolizes strength & trust. Our friends, Protus & Mbuso, wanted their communications brand to shout that - with a strong touch of an African vibe - yet, keeping it simple. Ahh.

i can't draw

I can't really draw. But we had to do an illustration composition in Uni, and so I gave it a shot. | Influence: Eduardo Recife of Misprinted Type.

promo & i

Here's a preview to another one of our final design projects in University. We had to put together a self-promo pack. That in itself was a struggle, because I hate promoting myself. I don't like it being 'about me' - which just wont work too well for any designer who wants to get work. Alas, i realised that I was being selfish*, and so i got over myself, hence as you can see, this site now exists. | This was 2004.

* meaning, i have this skill/gift for a reason, so i'm not going to waste it by being prude.
